Taking Action: The Path Ahead
Michigan’s public lands and recreation spaces are vital gathering places where people connect, play, and restore their minds and bodies. These spaces reach their full potential only when everyone — regardless of background or ability — can access and enjoy them fully.
True inclusion in the outdoors begins with recognizing and addressing the barriers that limit participation. It’s not just about who uses our parks and trails, but who plans them, funds them, maintains them, and creates programming. We are committed to identifying and removing these barriers — especially those rooted in geography, economic conditions, lived experience, or physical access — so that all individuals and communities feel welcome and represented.
Since 2017, mParks, Heart of the Lakes, and the Michigan Trails & Greenways Alliance have worked in partnership to advance more fair and inclusive practices across Michigan’s parks, public lands, trails, and recreation systems. Together, we represent more than 2,000 organizations that provide recreation opportunities, protect natural resources, and steward public spaces across the state.
