Rosalynn Bliss- Mayor, City of Grand Rapids

Lessons Learned in Leadership

Mayor Bliss was the first female to be elected Mayor of Michigan’s second-largest city when she took office on January 1, 2016. She previously served as a Second Ward City Commissioner for 10 years. Mayor Bliss also is an adjunct professor at Grand Valley State University's School of Social Work. She is an active member of the community. She is Past President of the Michigan Municipal League and serves on the boards of the Downtown Development Authority, Experience Grand Rapids, Grand Valley Metro Council, Kent County Land Bank Authority and Interurban Transit Partnership, among many other organizations. As Mayor, she is committed to supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as addressing disparities in our community and making sure that Grand Rapids is a great place for everyone.

 

Lorie Tuma, Ed.D., - Assistant Professor of Hospitality & Tourism Management, GVSU

Journey to Recreation

Dr. Lorie Tuma is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management Program at Grand Valley State University. She is excited to share information related to her work as a recreation and tourism social media researcher, imparting relevant data and statistics to workshop attendees. Tuma’s research, case studies, and GVSU courses also concentrate on community based-learning and student programming. She is a co-founder of Beyond Hands On and hopes to engage current industry professionals in providing interactive and immersive education and experience opportunities for students, emphasizing the importance of becoming a mentor for future graduates and recreation professionals.

Tuma will share personal experiences related to her journey to Recreation, including challenges that she has overcome along the way. LeadHERship attendees will leave Tuma’s session with new knowledge related to industry social media trends, a broader understanding of the legacy and impact that current professionals can have on students and new professionals, as well as specific ways to engage with Universities like GVSU to create mutually beneficial educational work experiences in Recreation Departments and Agencies across the state.

 

Public Speaking Development

Attendees will work on and leave with at least two speeches/pitches via a two-part process throughout the day; sparking creative thinking! Attendees will also build up their tool box and confidence!
