FOUNDATION

WE ADVOCATE

mParks shares the value of parks and recreation by engaging with government, foundations, media and other entities. We share the story of parks and recreation to ensure adequate funding and public support, so we can continue providing value to Michigan residents and visitors.

Investing in Michigan’s Parks and Recreation: A Stronger, Healthier Future for All

Michigan’s parks and recreation spaces are essential to our quality of life — supporting physical and mental well-being, fueling economic activity, and creating welcoming places for connection. mParks is committed to advancing policy solutions that make it easier for every community to benefit from vibrant, well-maintained outdoor spaces.

2025 Legislative Priorities

Our Policy Approach
mParks uses a collaborative, regionally grounded process to shape our legislative priorities. Our Public Policy Committee includes representatives from each region of the state, ensuring that community voices help drive state-level solutions.

Accelerate Access to Outdoor Opportunities
Streamline Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) Appropriations
  • Delays in project funding can increase costs and reduce community benefits. We advocate for a more efficient MNRTF process to ensure timely access to resources that support land conservation, park improvements, and community recreation.
  • Faster disbursement means more communities enjoy the benefits of these investments — when they need them most.

Increase Sustainable Investment in Parks
Boost Funding for Local and State Park Systems
  • Robust public funding ensures parks are safe, well-maintained, and welcoming for all. We support increased state investments that:
  • Expand access to recreational spaces
  • Support infrastructure improvements
  • Advance programs that strengthen community well-being
  • Well-resourced parks are vital for public health, economic strength, and environmental stewardship.

Update and Improve the Recreation Passport
Modernize the Program for Long-Term Sustainability
  • Michigan’s Recreation Passport provides essential funding for our state park system. mParks supports program updates that:
  • Improve accessibility for all residents
  • Ensure long-term financial sustainability
  • Enhance visitor experience through programming and facility upgrades

Why It Matters

  • Economic Growth: Outdoor recreation contributed $13.9 billion to Michigan’s economy in 2023 and supported over 118,000 jobs.
  • Stronger Communities: Properties near parks often see higher home values, and parks create spaces that promote connection, learning, and safety.
  • Better Health for All: Access to green space is linked to lower stress and reduced risk of obesity, especially in children.
